Mayor Reed Gusciora joins Arc Mercer for Liberian Independence Day Celebration and Flag Raising

On August 24, 2023 in honor of Liberian Independence Day, Arc Mercer hosted its second annual celebration of the holiday featuring cultural performances, poetry, a flag-raising, guest speakers, and a keynote address from Liberian Ambassador Jeff Gongoer Dowana. Mayor Reed Gusciora, a longtime ARC board member and advocate for special needs, was amongst those invited to speak at the ceremony.

“The Liberian flag is so similar to our own flag; we have a common goal, common people, and common responsibilities, especially when it comes to those with special needs. I am honored to join the Ambassador and the entire Arc family here, as we raise the Liberian flag,” Mayor Gusciora said.

In 2022, Arc Mercer made history after unveiling a partnership to bring an ARC chapter to the Republic of Liberia under the “International Partnership Initiative”. Through the project, staff members will be recruited directly from Liberia to train and build skills in New Jersey to return to Liberia.

“As Liberians, we are interconnected and bonded by a sheer heritage that transcends borders, tribes, or sectionalism. As we celebrate our Liberian heritage we must also reflect on the immense potential our community holds,” Ambassador Dowana stated.
