Rep. Watson Coleman Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Impacting Birthright Citizenship Order

Today, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court ruling on the case impacting Birthright Citizenship:

“This is a shameful abdication of responsibility by the majority on the Court. To issue this ruling on nationwide injunctions without considering the merits of the underlying birthright citizenship order thrusts millions of Americans into uncertainty and chaos.

“Issuing this opinion without addressing the inherently nationwide issue of citizenship is deeply irresponsible. In her dissent, Justice Sotomayor advised the parents of children who may be impacted by this order — children born to non-citizen parents after this order takes effect in 30 days — should prepare to join class-action suits seeking protection from the order. This is good advice.

“Furthermore, limiting the authority to issue nationwide injunctions to the Supreme Court alone consolidates still more power in the hands of six individuals, half of whom owe their seats to Trump himself.

“I am confident that state leaders in New Jersey will promptly take action to protect our residents from this blatantly unconstitutional order, and I will continue to work to protect all New Jerseyans. No matter where you were born, no matter who your parents are, you are welcome in our state”
