City of Trenton celebrates new Leon Rainbow murals at Unity Square Park

The City of Trenton is celebrating the completion of new mural installations by Trenton-based artist Leon Rainbow at Unity Square Park. The colorful artwork transforms several park walls and the exterior of the park’s concession stand, bringing themes of youth, sports, friendship, and community pride into one of the Capital City’s neighborhood recreation spaces.
Developed through the City’s Department of Recreation, Natural Resources & Culture in partnership with Rainbow’s Aerosol Illusions, the projects include a mural across three park walls and additional artwork wrapping around three sides of the concession stand, often called the snack shack. The original project plans encompass approximately 4,200 square feet of artwork.
The murals were envisioned to reflect the young people and families who use the park every day. Rainbow’s distinctive use of vibrant colors, energetic forms, and graffiti-inspired design helps turn ordinary walls into a visual celebration of local identity and the shared experience of play.
“Great public spaces should reflect the people who bring them to life. These murals celebrate the creativity of Trenton, the energy of our young people, and the pride we take in our neighborhoods. We are proud to work with local artists who help make our parks more welcoming and memorable,” said Mayor W. Reed Gusciora.

The new artwork complements other recent City investments in Unity Square Park. The City opened an inclusive playground there in September 2024 and celebrated the opening of a new mini-pitch soccer facility in November 2024. In September 2026, the former concession stand had substantial exterior renovations completed. Those repairs included: repairing damaged carpentry, replacing missing fascia and soffits, repairing broken windows, and cleaning granite inserts. Future improvement phases include new and enhanced pedestrian walkways, the demolition of the old community center, and further improvements to playing fields. Together, the improvements support a park where children can play, families can gather, and residents can take pride in their surroundings.
“We want children to walk into their neighborhood parks and see spaces that were made with them in mind. Leon has helped us make Unity Square Park more colorful and inviting while celebrating the recreation, friendships, and community connections that happen here every day,” said Paul Harris, Interim Director of Recreation, Natural Resources & Culture.
Rainbow, also known professionally as Aerosoleon, has created public art throughout Trenton and the region. In May 2026, the City highlighted another of his projects at Rutherford Avenue Park, where he worked alongside fellow artist Busta. The mural features Trenton landmarks and the youth-focused message “Dream Big.” His wider body of work includes the collaborative “Breaking Barriers” mural on Cass Street and community-centered art projects across the city.
The City encourages residents and visitors to see the new murals at Unity Square Park, located near Hamilton and Chestnut Avenues, and enjoy the park’s recreational amenities.
