LA GALERIE ADRIENNE Presents Te Veo, a Solo Exhibition of Works by Interdisciplinary Afro-Caribbean Artist Tamara Torres

From September 20 through October 31, 2024, La Galerie Adrienne in Trenton will present Tamara Torres’ solo exhibition of new art entitled Te Veo (I See You). An opening reception will be held Friday, September 20th from 5 – 8 p.m.
Tamara Torres’ Te Veo is an exhibition that showcases a transformative blend of vivid, emotive landscape paintings and conceptual sculptures. Torres is a Puerto Rican multi-disciplinary Afro-Latinx artist. In this collection of artworks, she boldly explores the psychic space between energy and existence of emotive human perspectives within the earthly environment. Her paintings create “mindscapes” that transcend traditional landscapes, evoking urban abstract landscapes both formally and conceptually. Torres’ techniques are in the service of art that is emotionally profound, inviting her viewers to connect with the depth in her work. Artworks will form the core of the La Galerie Adrienne exhibition, a tribute to Torre’s journey in her native city Trenton, N.J. Torres produces art that is both a personal expression of her identity as an Afro-Caribbean feminist and an expression of a more universal consciousness and striving. “Abstract art belongs to all of us. Take the time to understand it, feel it, learn from it, come and have some conversations with me,” Torres states. Tamara Torres
Tamara Torres is an interdisciplinary Puerto Rican Afro-LatinX feminist storyteller artist based in Trenton, New Jersey, working in various mediums. She creates narrative photography and sculptural collages that express the movement between energy and existence, as well as abstract “mindscapes” paintings that glide between realms of darkness and light. Torres is also a playwright, whose work deals with the tension between diasporic cultures and assimilation, feminism, community, and mental health. Her art practice delves into cultural roots and psychological and socio-political aspects based on her own autobiographical experience. Her artworks challenge misconceptions and move beyond familiar stereotypes of what an Afro-LatinX story should look like to emphasize the emotional complexity of the Afro-LatinX
experience. Certain symbols recur in her artworks, including her “shadow person,” representing a broader societal displacement and erasure of people who survive in a ravenous and colonialist world often omitted from mainstream experience. Her studio process stems from a place of truth inspired by her physical environment, ancestral colors and imagery, and transnational music. Tamara Torres
Torres has exhibited her artwork widely in the tri-state region – including Trenton, Newark, New York City, and Philadelphia – as well as nationally and internationally, in Chicago, London, Edinburgh, Vienna, and Rome. In March 2022, she was selected to be an art ambassador for the 2022 International Women’s Day Art Connects Women International Exhibition in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
