Statement On State Police Activity at City Hall

The City of Trenton became aware this morning that members of the New Jersey State Police were at City Hall in connection with an investigation involving alleged misconduct by a former City employee.

The investigation concerns a matter that the City itself identified, investigated, and referred to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office approximately two years ago.

In 2024, after allegations concerning an employee in the City’s Housing and Economic Development Department came to the Administration’s attention, the City initiated an internal investigation. The employee separated from City employment in 2024, and the City referred the matter and its findings to the Attorney General’s Office for further investigation and any action deemed appropriate.

The City will cooperate fully with the State’s investigation.

“This Administration has zero tolerance for misconduct or violations of the public trust,” said Mayor W. Reed Gusciora. “When credible allegations of wrongdoing come to our attention, we investigate them and, where appropriate, refer the matter to the proper law enforcement authorities. That is exactly what the City did here.”

The City has made referrals to appropriate prosecutorial authorities on multiple occasions when circumstances warranted doing so and will continue to do so when there is credible evidence of wrongdoing.

The overwhelming majority of City employees serve Trenton residents with honesty, professionalism, and dedication every day. Their public service should not be overshadowed by allegations involving the conduct of any one individual.

Because this matter remains under investigation, the City will not comment on the substance of the allegations or the investigation at this time.
