The artistry of legally blind talent Ken Alexander

The Trenton Free Public Library will host an Artist Talk event on January 27th, 2024 at 3 pm with none other than artist Ken Alexander.

Alexander is a self-taught painter located in Trenton, whose artistic focus centers on capturing diverse human experiences through the lens of abstraction. His distinctive style traversed the spectrum, ranging from intimate, vibrant portraits of jazz artists to expansive wall-sized canvases with striking colors, evocative words, and, on occasion, fragments of broken pottery and discovered objects. Noteworthy are his larger pieces that convey powerful messages addressing human suffering and social injustice, adding a profound layer of depth to his body of work.

The Trenton Free Public Library has been hosting Alexander’s exhibition “The Art of Ken Alexander” since December 2023, and will go on to showcase them until January 27, 2024. The self-taught artist who lost his vision to glaucoma about eight years ago was left with less than 20 percent of his vision in his left eye. However, this didn’t fully stop the talented artist from creating amazing works.

The jazz, 20th-century European, and African art-inspired artist also drew inspiration from modern and postmodern work. Showcasing his 2000 solo exhibition at Asbury Park’s El Lobo Negro Art Gallery where he received the “Artist of the Month” award as well as his studio in Trenton, which was included in Artworks Trenton’s “Art All Day” city-wide studio tour. And now the Trenton Public Library.

Trenton Free Public Library supports the arts by providing a gallery space for local and visiting artists to display their work as part of the City’s Creek to Canal Creative Arts District.
