TRENTON NAACP AWARDS FIRST ‘LYDIA THORTON’  EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE

The NAACP Trenton Branch wrapped up Women’s History Month by joining  the students of The College of New Jersey’s NAACP chapter for their annual  celebration highlighting women’s achievements throughout the years.  At the event, NAACP Trenton Branch President Leslie Summiel, Jr. presented Jazailis Gual, a junior at TCNJ, with the Lydia Thorton Social Justice Scholarship of $2,500 for  her work in social justice as Treasurer of the TCNJ NAACP Chapter.

“We are extremely proud of the members of the TCNJ Chapter and the work they do through NAACP on the campus,” said President Summiel, Jr. “Lydia was steadfast in her work for the community and the branch for many years. She would love that we  were uplifting the next generation and encouraging them to continue the fight for social  justice. ”We thank the NAACP scholarship committee for their work on the project and congratulate Ms. Gual on her award.”

Lydia Thorton was a lifelong member of the Trenton NAACP and served as Chair of  the Prison Branch Committee until her passing in November. Thorton was a fierce  advocate for social justice in Trenton and throughout the state. The NAACP Trenton  Branch recently established the educational award for social justice in her honor.
