Trenton receives a $500,000 brownfields assessment grant from the EPA

The City of Trenton is proud to announce its selection to receive a $500,000 Assessment Grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under its Brownfields Program. The City is among just 190 communities nationwide selected to receive this round of funding, with a total of $270 million distributed among the selected communities.
“The City of Trenton submitted an outstanding application, and we deeply appreciate the tremendous commitment of time and energy that went into its preparation,” said EPA Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization Acting Director Jerry Minor-Gordon-English.
Since its inception in 1995, EPA’s Brownfields Program has worked to help states, Tribal Nations, and communities around the country clean up and revitalize brownfield sites.
Brownfield sites are previously developed land where redevelopment is complicated by environmental contamination. Established in 1997, The City of Trenton’s Brownfields Program maintains an inventory of over 100 sites, over 60 of which have been remediated to the extent necessary for redevelopment. Since the program’s inception, dozens of these sites have been redeveloped for commercial/industrial use, public facilities & open spaces. Over 537 residential units in the City have been constructed on brownfield sites remediated for residential use.
This $500,000 Assessment Grant will fund assessments of ongoing brownfields sites, determining the presence of environmental contaminants such as lead and asbestos. These assessments will expedite the Department of Housing & Economic Development’s ability to proceed with structural demolitions & environmental remediation procedures.
“We’re grateful to receive this recognition & funding from the EPA,” said Mayor Reed Gusciora. “Our Department of Housing & Economic Development works tirelessly to breathe new life to our City’s brownfields sites. This funding will help continue that impact, changing the face of Trenton for decades to come.”
