Mayor Gusciora’s statement regarding fatal Hewitt Street fire
Our city is heartbroken by the devastating fire that occurred early this morning on Hewitt Street, which tragically claimed the lives of two young children, ages 7 and 4.
On behalf of the entire City of Trenton, I extend our deepest condolences and prayers to their family, loved ones, neighbors, and everyone affected by this unimaginable tragedy.
The fire involved two homes and displaced approximately 10 residents. The American Red Cross is assisting at the scene, and our Department of Health is working with the families who have been displaced. Trenton Fire and Emergency Services, the Trenton Police Department, and our Department of Inspections remain on scene, and county and state authorities are assisting with the investigation into the cause of the fire. Our schools have also been notified so they can provide support to students and families affected by this loss.
I want to thank our firefighters and other first responders who answered the call in the early morning hours, as well as all of the agencies and organizations now helping these families.
As we mourn these two young lives, I also urge every Trenton resident to make sure your home has working smoke detectors and that your family has a plan for getting out safely in the event of a fire. Check your smoke detectors today, keep a fire extinguisher accessible, and take care of one another.
